Funday
Thompson street estate annual Funday event began in the summer of 1999 as a one off event for children and young people living in the community. The event included information stands from a variety of local agencies including the estate landlords, a buffet lunch, fancy dress competition, raffle and Paddy the Clown! As the day was popular and well attended we decided to run the event again the following year.
"Funday 2000" as the event became known, included a range of new activities: bouncy castle, tombola stalls, barbecue, music/karaoke, playbus as well as popular events from the previous year, fancy dress, raffle and Paddy the Clown!
Over the years Funday has developed into a traditional community event adding different elements each year: Climbing wall, Krypton Factor, treasure hunt and much more..
Funday is organised by the Thompson street estate Resident's panel, who work hard throughout the year fundraising in support of the event. Other financial support comes from Newydd Housing Association, Barry Market Traders, Drop In Centre Development Trust, Avian Community Business, and individual contributors including local ward councillors.
The Funday Committee usually meet for the first time each year in June to begin preparations and planning the programme, and the Funday Committee is always looking for new helpers and new ideas!
Funday has always held on the last Saturday of the summer school holidays as a final treat before going back to school.
